El Rodeo Dedicated to Dr. Bartner; Features India Anderson

El Rodeo 2020 dedication2

The 2020 El Rodeo is dedicated to Dr. Bartner, heaping lavish praise on “The Man on the Ladder” over the past 50 years. In addition, the yearbook dedicates an entire page to India Anderson, the Spirit of Troy’s first woman drum major.

Because most of us no longer get the book, here are excerpts from their stories.

The Man on the Ladder — Dr. Arthur C. Bartner

“A cherished icon synonymous with Trojan football, and the establishment of the band as the Spirit of Troy, Bartner has distinguished himself as one of the most creative, innovative and famous band directors in America throughout his distinguished 50-year career.

“His impact on thousands of band members, USC’s broad community of students, and members of the international Trojan Family has been transformational and lasting. As a conductor and university marching band leader, his accomplishments are beyond exceptional. Additionally, his role as a goodwill ambassador-at-large for the university has added prestige and luster to al our school traditions, the most distinctive, of course, being the enduring Spirit of Troy.”

Marching forward — India Anderson

“…Perhaps the most prominent position in the band, the role of drum major includes leading the band onto the field before every football game and, as Anderson puts it, giving pep talks to the rest of the members.

“ ‘The band means a lot to me in my life and I’m really honored that the band has chosen me to lead them. Being drum major is great to further give back to the band in service and dedication. I would like to continue to be a leader and project an image that people look up to. I hope that I can embody traits that the band values.’ ”
