‘He Is the Epitome of the Trojan Family’

coach o note

Few football coaches are as loved as Ed Orgeron. During his short tenure leading the Trojans, Coach O attracted a loyal following among fans and was a huge fan of the TMB. In this week’s ARTCAST, Dr. Bartner relives Orgeron’s role in the 2013 season, including the climactic finish in a game against No. 4-rated Stanford.

“He was one of my favorite coaches ever,” Bartner recalls. He was the epitome of the Trojan Family.”

Coach O was known for sending notes to individual band members, and even climbed the ladder to conduct the TMB following the Stanford victory.

“He tied Marv (Goux), John (Robinson) and Pete Carroll all together,’ Bartner said. “More than any other coach. Ed loved to get on that ladder and grab the sword.”

In the second part of the ARTCAST, Bartner discusses the TMB’s role as LA’s band, performing at civic functions, the Hollywood Bowl, and sporting events. In a footnote to Kirk Gibson’s 9th inning home run to win the first game of the 1988 World Series, the TMB performed a pregame show, Bartner recalls, led onto the field by none other than Traveler.

This week’s Classic Spirit of Troy Halftime video recalls star-studded performances, including Diana Ross, Jason Derulo and Arturo Sandoval.
